Margaret Smith Obituary

Margaret Elizabeth Smith, age 89, of Pascagoula, MS, was welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven on May 18, 2020.

Margaret was born on February 12, 1931, in Birmingham, AL.  She graduated from Hanceville High School in 1947 as Valedictorian of her class. She married James Franklin Doggett, Sr. in 1950, and together they raised five children.

Margaret leaves as her legacy her five children, all of whom she cherished and loved: Jim Doggett, Jr, (Christie Doggett); Deborah Haigler Barron (Don Barron); Cathy Doggett Parrish; Tim Doggett; and, Jennifer Doggett Colmer (Jimmy Colmer).  She also leaves to cherish her memory nine grandchildren, who affectionately called her Granny and nine great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her Great MeeMee. She also leaves behind one brother, Paul M. Penn (Irma Penn), and Eugenia Ewing Doggett, whom she loved dearly.

After the two divorced in 1985, almost a decade later, in 1995, Margaret met another gentleman with whom she shared 25 years of marriage. She is survived by her husband, WO Smith.

Margaret is preceded in death by Louie Leonard Penn (father), Alice Marsh Penn (mother), Eugene Penn (brother), James Franklin Doggett, Sr., Mike Haigler, and Johnny Parrish (sons-in-law).

Margaret dedicated much of her life to her family but began working later in life at NACO Thousand Trails from where she retired. She loved gardening, plants of any kind, reading, and music.  She was involved in helping her children raise their families.

Her family will be having a private Memorial Service and Burial.  The family requests that donations be made to Sanctuary House, P O Box 1161, Pascagoula MS, 39568-1161. The family would also like to thank Janie Hickson and the entire staff at Sanctuary House for providing a loving environment and care to our mother. You may send condolences to her family or share a memory of Margaret on the Tribute Wall.
